Tower lighting malfunction fixed

Tower lighting malfunction fixed

A malfunction in the new flashing beacon atop the broadcasting tower located on the campus of Reedley High School has many neighboring residents complaining that it is too bright and even blinding at night. Some 250 feet up in the air, people have even reported seeing it from as far away as Highway 180.

According to Kings Canyon Unified School District Transportation Director, John Clements, the problem has been fixed. Clements said the new LED strobe light was not switching over to “night mode” which is a flashing red light that is far less intense compared to the flashing white light.Because you may not get it right the first time around, you'll be spending your energy saving light time returning things, or buying new items every so often until you do get it right.

“It was only supposed to be that bright during the day,” Clements said.

He said the malfunction was caused by the area’s bright lights interfering with the “photo cell‘s” night sensor. Clements said that section of town is particularly well lit at night with the security lights from the high school, as well as lights from the Riverwalk Shopping center and other surrounding businesses.

While he admitted that the light was a nuisance to some, Clements reminds the public of the real issue at stake - aircraft safety.A low voltage halogen Book scanner can produce the necessary illumination. Designers also suggest using downlight with eyeball lenses. This provides a focused illumination to a specific area.

“With a landing strip at the back of Reedley College and helicopters frequently landing at the hospital, it’s all about safety,” he said.

The new LED strobe light is more energy efficient than the previous conventional incandescent tower light bulbs. It was installed on Oct. 1 to comply with new FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations. This sounds a great way for home owners to place one of their possessions in a great light but can you imagine led downlight this can have for a shop owner. By using a LED downlight, the clever shopkeeper or store manager will be able to lead their customer to the very thing that they want them to see and hopefully persuade them to make a purchase. The tower is owned by the Fresno County Office of Education (FCOE) and is leased by numerous organizations such as the school district, the Reedley Police Department, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department, Sequoia Safety Council, and three cellular phone companies.

The tower users met last spring to update their lease agreements and discuss the FAA’s requirement that the tower be upgraded in order to meet federal standards. The two options given by the FAA included repainting the tower which would cost $15,000 or installing a new strobe light which would cost half that amount.

“In these tough times,Thankfully, the range now encompasses every fixture and fitting that you could led tube imagine which means that all tastes and style have been catered to and no consumer should feel that they are missing out on anything. we went with the less expensive option since most of the tower users are public agencies,” Clements said.

The FCOE contracted Howell Communications to install the new beacon as well as a third mid-tower clearance light,Assuming each bulb lasts the full 1,000 hours, we'll need to buy 50 solar panel per fixture to get 50,000 hours of total run time. and the costs were shared by all users. After the strobe was set up, preliminary tests showed that it was working successfully. However, Clements said he quickly noticed that something was wrong, as did many Reedley citizens.

During the day, the beacon flashes a bright white light that is unnoticeable to most people. As it gets darker, the strobe is supposed to switch to “night mode” which is a less bright flashing red light. When Clements realized that the beacon remained in “day mode” throughout the night he immediately called the installers who instructed him how to switch the strobe over manually until they could remedy the problem permanently.

According to Clements, the beacon has been repaired and the problem should not occur again unless there is another malfunction. In his 36 years with the school district, Clements said this has only happened about half a dozen times.

With the new brighter television broadcasting tower lighting, Clements joked that people “should always be able to find their way home to Reedley.”

The tower was originally used by the Fresno County Office of Education to transmit educational television programming to school sites throughout eastern Fresno County. A similar tower is in Tranquility, serving the west side of Fresno County. After “Channel 18” PBS came on line, the FCOE ceased broadcasting educational television from this tower. In October, 1976, the KCUSD transportation department became the first department in the school district to broadcast from the tower after the school district began using two-way radios following a bus kidnapping that same year in Chowchilla.
