Ormoc marks 19th anniversary of killer flood

Led by their mayor, Ormocanons flocked to a mass grave in the public cemetery here on Friday to pay homage to about 8,000 people killed by a killer flashflood that swamped the city 19 years ago.

Japan International Cooperative Agency (Jica) representative to the Philippines Akihisa Okuda and Shuji Kako of the Japanese Embassy also attended the ceremony. Felomina and Alberto Miralles, who lost their daughter to the flood, said they never failed to attend the commemoration rites.

The couple used to live on Mabini Street, one of the villages badly hit by the flood.

A teary-eyed Alberto said their daughter Imee, who was then 14 years old, was never found. He assumed she was one of the flood victims buried in the mass grave.

Mayor Codilla said it was ironic that the 1991 flood served as the turning point for Ormoc economically because this was when the world learned about Ormoc.

The aid that came from all parts of the world after the flood started Ormoc’s rapid economic growth, Codilla noted.
